At Langara, Scott Plear is a drawing instructor, but to the world he is a renowned artist.

Plear, 58, has been teaching in the fine arts department at the college for 24 years. When he is not guiding students on the finer points of sketching, Plear can be found following his other calling in life as an abstract painter.

Born in Vancouver, Plear fell in love with art as early as Grade 4 while attending Sir William Macdonald Elementary School in East Vancouver.

“The art instructor had us do stained glass, mobiles, oil painting,” said Plear. “It just kind of blew me away.”

In university, Plear experimented in other areas from zoology to agricultural science. He later returned to his artistic roots and earned a bachelor of fine arts at UBC. He also attended artists’ workshops at Emma Lake, the arts of campus of the University of Saskatchewan, where Plear said he ultimately decided to pursue painting as a career.

He has since exhibited his work all over Canada, as well as in the United States and Great Britain.

His paintings can be seen in downtown Vancouver at St. Paul’s Hospital and the MacMillan Bloedel Building, and in the Langara library.
